Magazine Page Layout

The objective of this project was to design a table of contents page and two page spread using my own wine label and inspiration from Bon Appetit magazine. I began the project by researching grid layouts and determining the grid that would suit my planned article. A document was created with the grid styles that were chosen for the project and pencil sketches determined placement of text, photos and other elements. Photos were taken of the wine bottle, cheeses and fruits in an outdoor environment to match the wilderness theme of Black Bear. Text was written about the fictitious winery, the people associated with the winery, and tips for a party featuring the wine. The grid on the two-page spread is divided into three columns. The first page has a photo that is 2 columns wide to give weight to the page. The bold large font of the headline and the text box that highlights it give the titles visual weight over other elements in the spread. Asymmetrical balance is achieved on the page through use of the headline and subhead, the photo and the green accent shapes. Design For Good

These are two examples of a campaign that would promote membership at the Virginia Zoo. Public transportation (city buses, the Tide and the Wave) in Norfolk and Virginia Beach would feature large ads to reach locals as well as tourists. This ad can have many forms that would be similar in order to reach a large target audience. Animals featured in the ads would be interchangeable so that new tag lines can be created. (“Membership hits the spot”-giraffe, “Membership-have you ‘herd’ how great it is?”-elephants, bongos, herding animals, “Membership- more fun than a barrel of monkeys”-monkeys) Spring is also the time when school age children take school field trips to the zoo so flyers would be given to the children that visit with their school. The flyers would coordinate with the public transportation ads in color, font and theme and contain membership information and an activity for the child to keep (animal ears or an animal mask they can cut out and wear.)

Students were given the task of designing a book cover for Freud’s “Interpretation of Dreams” by combining their own imagery with the provided text. My idea was to use the face of someone sleeping mirrored and with a gradient background on the front cover. The back cover has the same gradient background, but features shadowy birds in flight.

Students were instructed to choose a topic and design an effective infographic for their chosen topic. The topic chosen was the decline in creativity in children and how to improve creative thinking skills in children and adults. Research was done and data collected and organized to prepare for the project. Brainstorming and thumbnail sketches were done to develop appropriate illustrations for the topic. Sketches were done to determine the layout for typography and graphics. Adobe Illustrator was used to do vector drawings and typography.
